boku wa means ”I” indicating the subject of the sentence. boku no means "my". Examples:ぼく わ ニューヨーク に すんでいます. boku wa New York ni sundeimasu. (I live in New York.) ビートルズ は ぼく の おきにいり の バンド です. The Beatles wa boku no okiniiri no bando desu. (The Beatles are my favorite band.)

desu is not too formal. When talking to someone without sounding too casual, ”desu” is commonly used.
