watashi is more polite/feminine while boku is informal and slightly masculine in my opinion. they are both words for "I" though

It's different actually.
"Boku no" means my (just male will say "Boku")
"Watashi wa" means I (male or female can use "watashi" also)

"boku no" means "my", "watashi wa " means "I (as a subject)".
"boku" is a word describe a first person in Japanese grammar.
It is a casual word especially used by a boy and young male.
"no" is a possessive marker.
"watashi" is a most general word describe a first person in Japanese grammar.
It is a polite word used by everyone.
But boys usually use "boku" instead of "watashi".
Young males use "boku" in casual situations and "watashi" in formal situations.
"wa" is a topic marker.
but It usually combine a topic marker with a subject marker.
- Boku no jitensha wa akai.
My bike is red.
-Watashi wa natu ga suki desu.
I like summer.
